Indigenous Student Advisor (ISA) – Attendance Focus                             

Location:                 Joseph H. Kennedy Public School

Start date:              As soon as possible

The Joseph H. Kennedy Indigenous Student Advisor (ISA)- attendance focus, will provide intensive supports to students who identify as Indigenous with the goal of all students reaching personal excellence. The Indigenous Student Advisor will play a lead role in assisting all staff members to improve achievement, attendance, well-being, and graduation rates for students who self-identify as Indigenous throughout DSB Ontario North East.

As the Indigenous Student Advisor with attendance focus, you will be responsible for supporting and promoting attendance among students who self-identify as Indigenous. Your role will involve building positive relationships with students, families, Nations, outside agencies, and community partners to address attendance barriers and provide necessary support. The ISA will be the primary contact for attendance of students who self-identify as Indigenous.

​The responsibilities of the Indigenous Student Advisor (ISA) – Attendance Focus will include but are not limited to:

  • Daily tracking of attendance using the Power of BI to support, and monitor attendance.
  • Monitor and track attendance data and provide regular reports and updates to school administration.
  • Regularly communicate with families of students who are at risk of being persistently absent.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve attendance rates among students who self-identify as Indigenous using prevention, intervention, and monitoring strategies.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and support staff to identify students at risk of persistent absenteeism and develop targeted intervention plans utilizing high yield strategies from Attendance Matters.
  • Working with the Attendance Counsellor, participate in home visits, meetings, and outreach activities to engage families and address attendance concerns.
  • Creating and enhancing a welcoming and supportive space.
  • Building close, supportive relationships with students, families, Nations, and outside agencies.
  • Acting as an advocate for Indigenous students within the school team (i.e., school staff, families, Nation(s), community services and outside agencies.
  • Collaborate with community organizations and agencies to connect students and families with additional resources and support.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills related to Indigenous education and support services.

​Qualifications:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma and/or experience
  • Post-secondary education is an asset (e.g., Educational Assistant, Social Work)
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Demonstrated experience/knowledge of cultural teachings and best practices is required.

​Salary as per the current OSSTF - PSSP Collective Agreement Collective Agreements (dsb1.ca)
